NJDOT crews were already working to fix a road depression spotted on Feb. 10 when testing revealed a large, unexpected cavity under the center lane of Route 80 east near Exit 34.

The good news? Route 80 westbound is stable, NJDOT Commissioner Fran O’Connor said. "The bad news is a significant void was identified underneath the center lane of I-80 eastbound, which will require an extensive and robust repair," she said.
NJDOT has expanded the work zone and says crews will be working around the clock to fill, stabilize, and reinforce the roadbed. But it won’t be a quick fix.
With lane closures already causing serious backups, State Police are manually controlling traffic signals along Route 10 and Route 46 to help keep things moving, officials said. NJDOT has also adjusted Route 15 signal timing to reduce congestion.
All eastbound traffic is being rerouted at Exit 34 with detours sending drivers onto Route 15 northbound before looping them back onto I-80. Route 10 eastbound and Route 46 eastbound are being suggested as alternate routes.
Motorists are urged to avoid the area if possible and check 511nj.org for real-time updates.
Buckle up, New Jersey—this one’s going to take a while.
